The NTL Pension Plan provides benefits for certain dependants on the death of a Plan Member. The Trustees’ website provides further details of what to do on the death of a Plan Member and how to receive dependant’s benefits. It should be noted that there may be an interruption of payments between the death of a member and commencement of payments to any dependants as the process to validate a dependant’s pension normally takes 6 to 8 weeks from when the documents required in connection with the death are provided.

Although not specifically a pension matter we have heard of cases where the death of a member, who was the account holder for a broadband service that also provides email addresses, has lost access to all the family’s email addresses. In the case of Virgin Media, when an account is closed all associated email accounts will also be closed after a minimum of 90 days. (This is in line with their standard process.) However an account can be transferred to another person, on the death of the account holder, without losing the associated email accounts.

Other ISPs probably have similar arrangements and we believe that in some cases the account can be set up in advance with a joint account holder or nominated alternative person, but this is not the case with Virgin Media.
